The power to punish for contempt is inherent in all courts and contempt is classified as either civil or criminal in nature. A civil contempt is remedial and the penalty serves to enforce compliance with a court order. A judgment of civil contempt is conditional and may be lifted when the disobedience ends. Proceedings in civil contempt are between the original parties and are instituted, tried and treated as a part of the main case.
